“The president has one hand out demanding almost 200 billion dollars of our money for Iraq this year,” said Democratic Senator Robert Menendez.
“With the other he wants to veto a bill that provides for cancer research, hospitals, early childhood education and worker safety,” Menendez said.
Other Democrats warned the request would be subject to intense scrutiny, and hearings in Congress before it could come near to a vote.
Frustrated by their repeated failure to force Bush to change course on Iraq, Democrats are retooling their attack, arguing that spending on the war has meant popular, domestic priorities cannot be met.
The White House, staking out fiscally conservative ground for Bush, accuses Democrats of packing health and education bills with bloated spending.
Spokeswoman Dana Perino on Tuesday upped pressure on Democrats to pass the war spending measure before leaving Washington for end-of-year holidays.
“It’s the least that they could do for the troops,” Perino said. “Hopefully … the troops’ families will know by the holidays that they’re going to be taken care of.”
The Democratic strategy appears increasingly aimed not at stopping the war, which Democratic leaders admit may be politically impossible, but to squeezing Bush’s Senate Republican allies on Iraq, before congressional polls next year.
