Poland’s Finance Ministry forecasts February inflation at 4.6 percent. January inflation reached 4.3%, according to to the statistics office. Jakubczyk added PKN management has until March 10 to make a decision about the unions’ demands. “Accepting the 10.5% wage increase versus our original estimate of 7% would imply additional costs of 10-15 million zlotys for the company,” KBC securities analysts wrote in a note. “(But) a strike could cause much bigger losses.”

A booming economy and emigration have created a tight labour market in Poland where salaries in the private sector have been rising around 11% year-on-year. Last week, Polish copper producer KGHM reached a tentative agreement with its own unions to raise wages 7-8%, below their initial demands for a 15% raise in basic pay, but still higher than the 6% raise in 2007.

Warzsawa, Monetary Policy Council member Halina Wasilewska-Trenkner told the Gazeta Prawna daily.Poland’s inflation will hopefully not exceed 4.5% in Q1, but is unlikely to return to the 2.5% target before Q1 2009, the rate-setter added.”I think that the main interest rate hike to some 6% will be necessary,” Wasilewska-Trenkner said.
